Cricket club on the up thanks to grant
A Walsall cricket club believes it will soon become a top class facility for players and spectators following a £13,500 grant from the owners of a landfill site in the borough.
Pelsall Cricket Club will use the donation, from waste contractors Cleansing Service Group, to improve the playing surface, put up benches for spectators and carry out renovations to the storage shed, nets, changing room and score box.
Committee members believe the investment will mark a new phase in the club's history in helping them attract new players and enabling them to consolidate their position in Division 2 of the Birmingham league.
The club's youth section, which runs teams at under 13, 15, 16 and 17 levels, is also expected to benefit.
Keith Stevens, who has responsibility for fundraising, said: "We are very grateful to CSG for their donation."
Good causes
"We would not have been able to complete these renovations without their support. Our aim at Pelsall is to provide a first class cricketing facility for the local community to use in both a social and playing capacity."
Dr Ian Carnell of CSG, said: "We have an ongoing commitment to fund landfill tax projects in the Walsall area."
"This project is yet another example of the way the landfill industry can help local community projects."
Pelsall Cricket Club is one of several organisations and good causes across Walsall to have benefited from grants totalling £100,000, which were announced last week.
Other beneficiaries include Pelsall Villa FC, Beacon Church in Pheasey and Walsall Council's Streetcare division for a project to compost household waste.
