Church Monument Finds New Home

Church Monument

A war memorial has found a new home after it was removed from a Black Country church so reconstruction work could be carried out.

The memorial was in the west wall of the nave at St Paul's Church in Darwall Street, Walsall, but is now in the foyer of the council house in the town centre.

Walsall's Mayor, Councillor Roger Collins unveiled the memorial yesterday. It is close to the existing war memorials and also has a plaque explaining its history.

Ken Marcham, chairman of Bloxwich Royal Navy Association was among former sailors who watched the ceremony. Mr Marcham served in the Navy between 1939 and 1954.

The war memorial commemorates the men who lost their lives in the First World War.

While St Paul's Church was under reconstruction, the larger alabaster memorial was removed from the church walls and placed in storage.

Officers from both the church and Walsall Council have worked together to find a suitable and fitting new home for the memorial, which was first dedicated on March 19th, 1921.

Representatives from St Paul's and officers involved in the project joined the Mayor and Mayoress for the ceremony.
